Sleep and Dreams Part 4

This is the final collection of dreams that I was able to find at this time. I seem to recall a couple other that I wrote down at some point, but they weren't in this series. Weird stuff, these dreams are.

From Mar 10:

The web server keeps crashing on a port 42 error. Stupid event notification that calls with exponential back-off that isn't working. Can't figure out how to turn it off. Informant that helps us figure out what is going on gets killed. Something to do with viewing Flash internally. Elaborate death staged with food.

From Mar 11:

I go into a warehouse type of building with two other people. Lots of funky automatic doors. Long corridors and finally a ladder that goes down to the first level of parked cars. All of the cars have paint splatters and broken windows. They are all really nice cars. I realize that the vandals will get caught because of all of the cameras along the way. Still I'm anxious and think the vandals are still there, so I run out of the building.
Also from Mar 11:
Arrive home to find the house sinking into the ground and animals running all over the place. I run upstairs to awake my mother. It takes a couple of loud knocks, but she wakes up and we can see the animals running outside and the ground getting closer as the house sinks.

From Mar 12:

I start on a canoe trip with John. The odd part os that we start in the basement of a building and as we paddle out of it, we pass people we know and need to head upstairs/upstream to finally get out.

From Mar 15:

I'm in Mexico on vacation with my mother. I'm standing in line at a food place and she is going to park the car.

From Mar 16:

I'm standing outside some random house. I don't know why I'm there. Anthony finds some dude he knows and starts a fight. Very bloody. "Don't go for the mouth." "What kind of fight are you looking for then?" As they fight around the parking lot other people get involved. Nick does flying off into the woods after accidentally getting involved. Meanwhile people are up on top of the roof getting transformer symbol like shields to put on the hoods of their cars.

Sleep and Dreams Part 3

One aspect of dreaming that I'm always amazed of is the apparent randomness of them. Today's entry is a great example. Various pieces come into play without any real background about how they came to be. In this case various people, objects, and situations appear without any back-story. This doesn't bother me that much, but it is more amusing than anything.

From Mar 9, 2001:

A random piece of spam email causes me to go to some place to meet a dude. When I get there I fill out some form and after I'm done I get invited in. I get feed very well and am at a really nice house. At some point the dude asks me to make a phone call. That call causes me to have a long conversation with a "major dude" that keeps mentioning the general. I know at this point these people are part of some anti-government group. I have to bullshit my answers but I manage to talk my way through everything. As I'm on the phone the dude is getting angry and takes my friend (who I guess came along with me) outside where my friend talks to a girl that is about to throw herself at my friend, but my friend still manages to piss her off.

I finally finish on the phone and need to change to leave (don't remember changing as I came in). However, I've already packed everything so I need to unpack my suitcase and scramble to find clothing. I grab stuff that is all very dirty and doesn't match. The brown dirt on my white pants really stands out, while my black pants are also all dirty. I'm trying to think of some way of getting out of this mess, without getting myself killed.

That's where the entry finished, kind of reads like a cliff-hanger. Tune in tomorrow night, see if I make it out alive, or find some other random item has mysteriously appeared in my dream.

Hibernate, Oracle, Named Query, and Null

I'm sure this is captured in a bunch of FAQs but I thought I'd mention it here so I at least have an easy place to find it in the future. If you have a named query with parameters in Hibernate at some point you will probably run across this error:

Hibernate operation: could not execute query; bad SQL grammar [select table0_.id as id, table0_.version_stamp as version3_90_, table0_.user_id as user4_90_, table0_.confirmed as confirmed90_ from example_table table0_ where table0_.user_id=?]; nested exception is java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00932: inconsistent datatypes: expected NUMBER got BINARY

While the error looks nasty, the most likely cause is that you accidentally passed in a Java null value instead of the expected type. In this case it should have been a Java Long value.

Sleep and Dreams Part 2

Besides Christmas, which I still enjoy (especially the gift buying and decorating the tree), the one thing I really like about this time of year is the bedding you get to use. I have an awesome set of flannel sheets from L.L. Bean. I combine those with a fleece blanket and finally a comforter from some bed set a got awhile ago. Fluffy, warm, and soft. I love my bed.

From Mar 8, 2001:

I'm trying to return a knife to Stephanie. I park my car and start running to her house. I get lost along the way and run into a large group of business men who I think look like detectives. I think they will discover the knife and take it. I'm in sweat pants. I keeping running and end up at a convention where I try and go through to find out where I am, but they are charging money. I wander around and end up finding a bathroom which I use.

When I come out there is a store selling Halloween stuff and they have big scary cards. I want to buy one for Stephanie, but I'm afraid I'll drop the knife when I go to pay for it. I head back to the bathroom and notice I've accidentally, cut myself with the knife. I'm now afraid the wound will never heal because the knife is made out of some funky metal. I finally jog back to my car and wake up.

Kind of a trippy dream. I have a book that deals with dream interpretation, but I've never been able to convince myself that there is anything to that.

Sleep and Dreams

In March of 2001 I became interested in sleep and dreams. I read couple of great books on the subject that I should really reread and post some thoughts here. As part of this interest I started to capture what I could remember from dreams that I had. This worked under the theory that the more you wrote down about your dreams the better recall you would be able to build up over time. While unpacking a box from moving, I ran across some of my early scribbles. They amused me so I thought I'd spend the next few entries transcribing them.

From Mar 7, 2001:

I'm playing a Magic the Gathering like game that I've managed to collect all of the parts for. Switches to planning for my wedding and needing to rent a tux, but not knowing where my honeymoon is. Switches back to Magic and I'm hiding pieces of the game from people that I trust.

Not a very good entry, but hey it was my first night.

High-tech Washing

One of the biggest items I've purchased since moving into my new home has been a new washer and dryer. I spent a lot of time researching what kind of washer and dryer I wanted to get. I started off knowing that I wanted a front loading washer since I primarily used those at the laundromat. I've noticed they aren't as rough on my clothes as a top-loader, manage to spin more water out of the clothes, and I find getting my clothes in and out of them much easier.

I took a walk through my local Sears and saw some interesting choices but really had no idea what might be worth buying. It isn't every day I'm working with or looking up information about washers and dryers. I decided to turn to a more trusted resource and signed up for a one year membership at Consumer Reports.

They had just the information I was looking for and I found their report card style quick comparison guide helpful in narrowing down my choices. While it was probably more than I should have spent, I ended up going with the Whirlpool Duet series. They have the normal and the HT version. I decided that the few extra widgets on the HT was really going overboard so I stuck with the base models.

This past weekend I had a chance to do my first loads of laundry. They performed like a champ. I'm sure I could get even more out of them if I decided to pop the included instructional DVD into my system. Yes, my washer came with an instructional video. Maybe (like next year probably) I'll get around to posting a picture.

Eclipse, SVN, Subclipse, and case sensitivity

I don't know what it was about today, but I did something different when setting up a new workspace in Eclipse. We recently branched our code to work on a new feature for the site. I did my usual trick of copying my "Tip of the Tree" Eclipse workspace to a new directory and renaming it. I then launched Eclipse with the new workspace, deleted all of the old projects, and lastly imported the projects for the newly branched code. The problem was this time all of the nice Subclipse icons didn't show up. After repeating this process a couple of times, it finally dawned on me to check the Eclipse .log. It had this lovely message in it:

Provided SVN information does not match that on disk for project

A quick Google search didn't turn up anything helpful. Needless to say after a couple hours of banging of head against the desk I found the problem. Some combination of Eclipse, SVN, and Subclipse was case sensitive. I was saving time when importing the projects and just trying in the path, turns out even on Windows "c:\source\" is different than "c:\Source". The lesson in all of this is to only use the directory browser when selecting projects to import, otherwise the case may haunt you.

Along the way I also upgrade my versions of Subclipse and SVN, that lead to the following message showing up in my Eclipse .log:

!ENTRY org.eclipse.osgi 2005-12-06 12:06:18.377

I was only able to find one reference to that and by all indications it is a harmless error. At least after I corrected the case of the project path everything seems to be working fine. Not sure what brought that message on I kind of abandoned the scientific method of only changing one thing at a time when I entered the second hour of trying to figure out why things stopped working.
